Board of Directors

Russell G. Greig, Ph.D. – Executive Chairman

Dr. Greig served nearly three decades with pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline, most recently as President of SR One, GSK’s Corporate Venture Group. Prior to joining SR One, he served as President of GSK's Pharmaceuticals International from 2003 to 2008 and also served on the GSK Corporate Executive Team. Dr. Greig originally joined GSK (then SmithKline & French) in 1980 in the Departments of Tumor and Cell Biology. In 1991, following the merger with Beecham, he was appointed Vice President, Project Management. From 1993 to 1996, he served as Vice President and Director of Advanced Technologies in Genetics with special responsibility for managing collaborations with The Institute of Genomic Research and Human Genome Sciences. In 1996, Dr. Greig joined SmithKline Beecham's European Pharmaceutical Operations as Vice President and Director of European Market Development, and was later appointed Managing Director and General Manager of SmithKline Beecham's UK Pharmaceuticals. Following the merger of SmithKline Beecham with Glaxo Wellcome in 2000, he returned to the United States as Senior Vice President for Worldwide Business Development. Dr. Greig also serves on the boards of Genocea Biosciences, and the Edinburgh BioQuarter Commercialisation Advisory Group, and is a member of the Imperial College Innovations Healthcare Advisory Board. He holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Manchester, England, and is a former Fullbright Scholar.

Bradley J. Bolzon, Ph.D.

Dr. Bolzon is a Managing Director of Versant Ventures. Prior to joining Versant, Dr. Bolzon served as Executive Vice President, Global Head of Business Development, Licensing & Alliances with F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd., where he directed the company’s activities related to business development strategy, product licensing, company acquisitions, and R&D alliances. Under his leadership, Roche’s Pharmaceuticals Division established alliances with over 75 biotech companies worldwide and significantly strengthened the company’s product pipeline. Previously, Dr. Bolzon held executive roles at Eli Lilly and Company in drug discovery, business development, clinical research, and regulatory affairs. Dr. Bolzon currently serves as a board member for Amira Pharmaceuticals, Antipodean Pharmaceuticals, Sentient Pharmaceuticals, Metabolex, Speedel Holding, and serves as Chairman of the Board of Synosia Therapeutics and Flexion Therapeutics. He is also Chairman of EuroVentures, a wholly-owned start-up incubator of Versant Ventures. Dr. Bolzon received Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Science degrees in Pharmacology from the University of Toronto, and conducted his post-doctoral research training at the Ottawa Heart Institute in Ottawa, Canada.

Katherine S. Bowdish, Ph.D. – Chief Executive Officer

Prior to joining Anaphore, Dr. Bowdish simultaneously served as President of Alexion Antibody Technologies and Senior Vice President of Alexion Pharmaceuticals [NASDAQ: ALXN]. Alexion Antibody Technologies, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alexion Pharmaceuticals, was formed in September 2000 with the acquisition of Prolifaron. Dr. Bowdish was the founder, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Scientific Officer of Prolifaron, a privately held antibody discovery company that grew through partnerships with companies including Centocor and GSK, and emerged as an innovative leader in antibody therapeutics with a focus on developing new treatments for cancer, autoimmune disorders, and infectious diseases. Dr. Bowdish led the company from inception, to development of a portfolio of preclinical and clinical drug candidates, and ultimately through its acquisition by Alexion. She received her formal education in molecular genetics at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (Ph.D.) and in biology at the College of William and Mary (B.S.). Dr. Bowdish has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and has an extensive intellectual property portfolio, primarily focused in the area of molecular immunology.

Simeon J. George, M.D.

Dr. George is Partner at SR One . He currently serves as a board member at Genocea Biosciences and as a board observer at Rib-X Pharmaceuticals, Syntaxin and Bicycle Therapeutics. Prior to joining SR One, Dr. George was a consultant at Bain & Company and an investment banker at Goldman Sachs and Merrill Lynch. He earned his M.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and his M.B.A. degree from the Wharton School of Business, where he was a Mayer Scholar. He holds a B.A. in Neuroscience from the Johns Hopkins University, where he graduated Phi Betta Kappa.

Christopher J. Hollowood, Ph.D.

Dr. Hollowood is a Principal at Apposite Capital. Prior to Apposite, he trained as a fund manager with Neptune Management, with responsibility for healthcare sector investments, before moving into healthcare-focused venture capital and corporate advisory at Bioscience Managers. Dr. Hollowood attained his first degree in natural sciences, specializing in chemistry, and a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, both from Cambridge University. Between obtaining these degrees, Dr. Hollowood worked in the pharmaceutical industry as a medicinal chemist at GlaxoWellcome (GlaxoSmithKline) and Pfizer.

Stephen W. Kaldor, Ph.D

Dr. Kaldor is currently President & CEO of Ambrx, a privately held biotechnology company based in San Diego. Prior to joining Ambrx, he served as President & CSO of Syrrx from 2003-2005, and led the company through its $270MM acquisition by Takeda in 2005 and for several years post acquisition. Dr. Kaldor spent the first twelve years of his career in drug discovery and development at Eli Lilly and Company as both a researcher and Director. He received his formal education in organic chemistry at Harvard University (Ph.D.) and Columbia University (B.A.). Dr. Kaldor is the co-inventor of multiple compounds spanning several therapeutic areas that have advanced into the clinic including ViraceptTM, a marketed HIV protease inhibitor. He is the author of numerous drug discovery-related patents and publications and serves as a Director for several biotechs and venture capital firms.

Andrew J. Schwab

Mr. Schwab is a founder and Managing Partner of 5AM Ventures. Prior to founding 5AM Ventures in 2002, Mr. Schwab was a Principal at Bay City Capital (BCC). After joining BCC in 1999, he led the firm's investment and merchant banking activities for such companies as Cubist Pharmaceuticals, Metabolex, PTC Therapeutics, Symyx and Syrrx. Prior to joining BCC, Mr. Schwab was Vice President of Business Development at Digital Gene Technologies and a Vice President in the life science investment banking group of Montgomery Securities. At 5AM, he has led the firm's investments in and served on the Boards of Directors of Ikaria, Ilypsa (acquired by Amgen), Miikana (acquired by EntreMed), Panomics (acquired by Affymetrix), Synosia, and TivaMed. Mr. Schwab received a B.S. with Honors in Genetics & Ethics from Davidson College and is a member of the Davidson Alumni Association Board.

Laura K. Shawver, Ph.D.

Dr. Shawver is currently Chief Executive Officer and Director of Phenomix Corp, a privately held biotechnology company based in San Diego. Phenomix is developing dutogliptin for Type 2 diabetes with its partners Forest Laboratories and Chiesi Farmaceutici and the drug is currently being evaluated in a broad Phase 3 program. Prior to joining Phenomix, Dr. Shawver was the President of SUGEN, Inc. from October 2000 to May 2002, after holding various positions there since June 1992. SUGEN, a biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery and development of small molecule drugs which target specific cellular signal transduction pathways, was acquired by Pharmacia Corporation in 1999. Prior to her employment at SUGEN, Dr. Shawver was employed at Berlex Biosciences, formerly known as Triton Biosciences, from August 1989 to June 1992. She is founder of The Clearity Foundation, a non-profit organization which seeks to improve treatment options for women with ovarian cancer. Dr. Shawver received a Ph.D. degree in Pharmacology and a B.S. degree in Microbiology, both from the University of Iowa.
